because He experienced rejection, betrayal, abandonment, and unimaginable suffering. When you bring your broken heart to Him, you are not bringing it to someone who merely sympathizes. You are bringing it to Someone who truly understands.

Psalm 34:18 gives one of the most comforting promises in Scripture …

“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.”

Notice what the verse does not say.

It does not say God is waiting on the other side of your healing.

It says He is near while your heart is still broken.

Sometimes we assume that if we had enough faith, we wouldn’t hurt so much. But faith does not eliminate pain. Faith gives us Someone to hold onto while we walk through it.

Healing rarely happens all at once.

It comes one surrendered day at a time.

One prayer.

One promise.

One step of trusting God even when your emotions tell you nothing will ever change.

One of my favorite passages is found in Isaiah:

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

God never promises that life will be free from heartbreak.

He promises His presence.

That changes everything.

There may be days when memories flood back and grief feels fresh again. Healing is often less like climbing a staircase and more like walking a winding path. Some days you feel strong. Other days you wonder if you’ve made any progress at all.

Keep walking.

God is doing work beneath the surface that you cannot yet see.

Romans 8:28 reminds us:

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

Notice that it says all things work together for good. It does not say all things are good.

Heartbreak itself is not good.

Betrayal is not good.

Loss is not good.

But God is so powerful that He can weave even our deepest pain into a story of redemption.

Perhaps the greatest healing comes when we stop asking, “Why did this happen?” and begin asking, “Lord, how can You use this to make me more like Jesus?”

That question changes our focus from the wound to the One who heals.

You may not recognize the person you are becoming right now, but God does.

He sees the stronger faith growing beneath the tears.

He sees compassion developing where bitterness could have taken root.

He sees trust replacing fear.

He sees hope returning, little by little.

One day you may discover that the very place where your heart was shattered became the place where God’s grace became most visible.

If your heart is hurting today, don’t rush the process.

Stay close to Jesus.

Open His Word even when you don’t feel like it.

Pray even when all you have are tears.

The same God who binds up the brokenhearted is still healing hearts today.

And He has not forgotten yours.

Reflection

What Scripture has carried you through your own season of heartbreak?

I’d love to hear in the comments. Sometimes the verse that strengthened you may become the very encouragement someone else needs today.

Joy That Circumstances Cannot Steal

There is a kind of joy the world simply cannot understand.

Sandy Hancock

There is a kind of joy the world simply cannot understand.

Most people think joy is found in favorable circumstances. We may become distracted. We may forget He is near. We may allow our circumstances to consume our attention. But He has never left.

David understood this when he wrote:

“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?… If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.” (Psalm 139:7–10)

There is no place you can go where God’s presence cannot reach you.

He is with you on the mountaintops, and He is with you in the valleys. He is present on the days when your prayers seem effortless, and He is present on the days when your heart is too weary to find the words.

His presence is not determined by your feelings. It is determined by His promise.

That changes everything.

If joy depends on circumstances, then our joy will rise and fall with every disappointment, every diagnosis, every broken relationship, every financial hardship, and every unanswered prayer.

But if joy is found in the presence of God, then joy is always available.

This doesn’t mean we never grieve. Scripture is full of people who wept deeply. Jesus Himself was called “a Man of Sorrows.” (Isaiah 53:3) Grief and joy are not enemies. They often walk together.

The difference is that sorrow does not have the final word.

When we remember that the One who loves us is beside us, holding our hand through every trial, our hearts find a peace that circumstances cannot explain.

Just as two people deeply in love can enjoy simply sitting together in silence, we can learn to enjoy simply being with God.

Not because He is constantly giving us something.

Not because He is solving every problem immediately.

But because He is enough.

David understood this again when he wrote:

“You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11)

Notice where fullness of joy is found.

Not in possessions.

Not in perfect health.

Not in having every prayer answered exactly when we want.

It is found in His presence.

The more we become aware that God is with us throughout the day, the more our hearts begin to rest. We start talking with Him while washing dishes, driving to work, folding laundry, or sitting quietly with a cup of coffee.

He is no longer Someone we visit during our morning devotion.

He becomes the Companion who walks beside us every moment.

That is where lasting joy is born.

Perhaps today your circumstances are anything but joyful.

Maybe your heart is heavy.

Maybe you’re waiting for God to answer a prayer that has lingered for months or even years.

Don’t wait for your circumstances to change before you seek joy.

Turn your attention instead to the One who has never left your side.

He has been with you every step of the journey.

He is with you now.

And He always will be.

When we learn to treasure His presence above every earthly blessing, we discover a joy that no circumstance can steal.

“Surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)

May we learn to live each day in the quiet awareness that the One we love most is already here.
<p class="button-wrapper" would.

Everyone wants to be rich.

Say the word “rich” and your brain goes straight to a number. A house with no mortgage. A bank account you never have to check with a knot in your stomach. Trips you book without doing math first. Maybe a closet full of things you never have to put back.

You may think, ‘if I have enough zeros in my bank account, then I have it made’. Most of us have wondered what life would feel like to be rich. We imagine the freedom, the security, and the ability to say yes to every whim.

But there is a problem with assuming wealth is a place you reach by collecting things. It was full of challenges, but I made it through, and after eight weeks, I was done. Those eight weeks were incredibly bare-bones,there was absolutely no TV at all, and the only time we were allowed to sit in a chair was during classroom instruction. The rest of the time, we had to sit on the floor.

An Unexpected Encounter at the Terminal

Before we left Orlando, we were granted what is called “Liberty Weekend”, a brief window to enjoy the local area. It was during that weekend that I met a fellow sailor named Moses.

When boot camp officially ended, we were dropped off at the airport to wait for our flights to our respective duty stations. For me, that meant San Diego. I walked around the terminal, looking and looking through the crowds, hoping to catch a glimpse of Moses one last time. But I never could find him.

As I was walking through an airport bar, another guy noticed me searching the room. “Who are you looking for?” he asked.

I told him I was looking for someone I had met during Liberty Weekend. By that point, I had pretty much given up. He told me to sit down, and as we talked, I found out that he was also being stationed in San Diego. In fact, he was booked on my exact plane. We sat together in the bar until it was time to board, and because flights back then didn’t strictly enforce assigned seating, we managed to get seats right next to each other for the entire cross-country flight.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" we hadn’t been allowed to watch television in two months. “Let’s go get a motel room so we can watch TV,” he suggested.

I was only 20 years old and still very naive at this point. To me, watching TV sounded wonderful, so I agreed to go.

Well, that is not what he had on his mind. But he didn’t get his way. We stayed the night, but I held my boundaries.

Three Weeks Until Marriage

Despite that rocky start, we continued to see each other. Every day when we weren’t in class at Navy “A” School, we hung out. I was training to be a Data Processing Technician, and he was training to be a Mess Specialist, which is basically a Navy cook.

After only about three weeks, we had a short break in our training. We used it to fly up to South Lake Tahoe, and we got married.

It was incredibly fast; I hardly knew him when I said “I do.” Looking back, a massive part of the reason I married him was because of everything I had just survived so far in my life.

I thought, Here is someone who actually wants to be with me and stay with me. I didn’t think I was good enough to have anyone else at that point, and I was tired of dating different people. I just wanted to settle down and build a family, even though he was a stranger.

The Storm Begins

We eventually moved out of the barracks and got an apartment off of Midway, not far from Point Loma. At first, things seemed okay. He was stationed at North Island Naval Base in Coronado, and I was stationed out at Point Loma. We had alternating duty schedules, which meant one of us was often home alone, though we occasionally shared days off together.

But the environment quickly turned toxic. He became violent, not only verbally abusive, but physically abusive. It escalated to the point where one time I ended up in the emergency room because of his hitting me.

He also started having affairs. He began sleeping with a girl named Michelle. In a deeply painful act of betrayal, he even gave her my wedding present, a beautiful silver table set that my mother had given me when we got married. I never got it back.

Holding On For the Family

Through all of this, I never left him. We stayed together in that apartment the entire time. I was determined to make the marriage work despite the staggering obstacles.

We had married in July, and by my 21st birthday in September, I was pregnant. Everything was crashing down on me all at once, in the very same year I had joined the Navy. While he was having his affairs, I was pregnant. I clung to that marriage because I was desperately trying to keep the structure of a family together.

But I couldn’t hold it together alone. Shortly after our son was born, David took off. He abandoned us, and I didn’t see him again for several months.

Looking Back on the Shifting Sand

When I reflect on this chapter of my life, I can see clearly how my twenty-year-old heart was simply starving for stability. I had enough courage to join the Navy, leave home, complete boot camp, move across the country, learn a technical job, and start a completely new life. Yet underneath all that strength was a young woman who did not fully understand her own value.

So when a man said, “I’ll stay,” it felt like security. When you don’t believe you are good enough to be chosen on your own terms, you become hyper-vulnerable to anyone who simply offers to stay. At the time, I mistook David’s presence for safety because I was so tired of being adrift.

My determination to build a family was so fierce that I single-handedly tried to force a broken, unsafe relationship to carry the weight of my security. I chose to stay through the physical abuse, the emergency room visit, and the deep betrayal of him breaking our wedding vows with another woman, all because I was trying to preserve the structure of a family for my unborn son. Reading it now, knowing the rest of my life, I want to reach back through time and tell that young woman: “You do not have to earn your worth by being chosen. You already have worth.” Protecting the mere idea of a family should never come at the cost of your personal safety and dignity.

Ultimately, when we try to build our safety on the shifting sand of another broken person, that foundation will always fail us. David was a crumbling anchor. When he abandoned me and our newborn son, it brought my self-manufactured plans to a complete halt. It proved to me that sometimes, the human structures we rush to build with our own hands have to completely fall apart before we can ever find a true, unwavering foundation.

Connect with Me

If you can relate to the heavy burden of trying to single-handedly preserve a relationship that is failing, or the vulnerability of reaching for security when you don’t feel “good enough,” please know you are not alone. Have you ever rushed into a foundation only to watch it crumble?

Please leave a comment below and share your own reflections—I would love to connect with you.

The Flight to Self-Sufficiency

Who is Sandy Hancock

Sandy Hancock

Have you ever experienced the precise moment when you realize that no one is coming to save you? Mike went north to Pacific Union College (PUC) in St. Helena, and I moved down to Long Beach to study interior design. I loved the concept of creating beautiful spaces, but I quickly collided with reality. Back then, you had to manually draft and draw out exactly how a finished room would look. Lacking that technical drawing ability, I left after a year.

The following year, my dad was able to arrange the tuition for me to attend PUC myself. While I wanted a degree, my primary focus was reclaiming my relationship with Mike. I was trying to reclaim the safety of the devout family dynamic I had fallen in love with. But while I had been away in Long Beach, Mike had started dating a girl named Laurie. My desperate attempt to break them up failed, and the overwhelming weight of that shame drove me to make the choice to leave the school entirely in the middle of the fall semester.

It was after leaving PUC that I returned to my dad’s apartment, and I enrolled in a community college trimester. After that semester ended, my mother arrived for a visit from Texas with an offer that sounded like the perfect blueprint for my future. My brother was to pitch in with a life-altering promise if I moved back to Texas with Mom, he would completely cover my tuition, books, and apartment. All I had to do was find a job to pay for my food and utilities.

It sounded like a plan. Packing up the car I received from my dad at my high graduation, mom and I drove across the country to Texas.

But by the time I arrived in Sherman, Texas, did the legwork, and gathered all the necessary apartment and tuition information, the rug was pulled out from under me. My brother simply changed his mind. Suddenly, I was stranded in Texas with very little money. I knew from deep personal experience that permanently living with my mother was not an option. I was stuck, and I had to figure out a way to survive entirely on my own.

Wolves and Wilderness

Lacking the gas money to make the long drive back to California, I had to pivot. I remembered a stop we had made in Lubbock on the drive out to Sherman, where I had tried to locate David Mantooth, a boy I had dated years earlier. While I didn’t find David, I had met his father, who ran a local preschool. Desperate for a way out, I drove to Lubbock and asked him for a job.

He hired me, but the employment came with a dark catch. He quickly began applying pressure, demanding “fringe benefits” in exchange for the position. Even though I was financially vulnerable and desperately needed the income, I refused to compromise my values. The predatory pressure became too much, and I walked away.

Once again, I was broke and looking for an escape route. I found a job caretaking for a disabled woman who had survived polio. She relied on a wheelchair by day and required an overnight oxygen apparatus to sleep. I dedicated myself to caring for her, working steadily until I finally saved every single cent of the gas money required to return to California.

Drawing the Line

When I finally made it back to Southern California, I landed in Anaheim, renting a room from my maternal uncle and aunt. I managed to secure a steady job as a receptionist.

But sitting at that desk day after day, a clear-eyed realization settled in. A receptionist’s salary was never going to buy the independent life I wanted, nor would it ever fund the college degree I still craved. I knew that living like this wasn’t the end-all.

Up until that point, my life had been heavily dictated by the whims, volatile struggles, and broken promises of others. This was the moment I stepped entirely out of that cycle. Joining the Navy was a bold, strategic financial decision. It was a pivot to a career.

I enrolled in the military to ensure my own self-sufficiency, resolving that I would never have to depend on anyone else for my security or my education again. Within a few short weeks, I packed my bags and boarded a plane to Orlando, Florida, for boot camp.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" Lightning cracked across the sky, and torrential rain began to drench her completely. But instead of keeping her head down and running for cover as most people would, she did something entirely counterintuitive: with every flash of lightning, she stopped, looked up at the sky, and smiled.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Confused by her behavior, he asked, “I saw you out there in the storm. Why in the world did you keep stopping to look up and smile at the lightning?”

The little girl looked up at her father and gave a life-altering response: “Oh, I stopped to look up because God was taking my picture!”

What standard human metrics define as a personal and technical disaster, this little girl viewed as a divine photo op. Her story illustrates a profound truth about human life: the weight of our environment is often determined entirely by our perspective. When the storms of life hit and hard setbacks derail our plans, do we see a chaotic crisis that has completely abandoned us, or do we see a moment where God is capturing and forging a deeper spiritual growth within us?

A storm is only as powerful as your lack of trust in the one who controls it. When you change your focus from the chaos around you to the God above you, a crisis stops looking like an abandonment and starts looking like a divine setup.

Two Perspectives in the Same Boat

The problem is rarely the storm itself; the problem is what we choose to believe about God while the storm is raging.

Take the famous account in Mark 4, where Jesus gives His disciples a simple directive: “Let us cross over to the other side.” These weren’t abstract theologians sitting on a safe shore; several of them Peter, James, and John were professional, seasoned fishermen who grew up navigating the volatile moods of the Sea of Galilee. They knew when a rough patch of weather was just a drizzle, and they knew when they were in genuine jeopardy.

When a violent windstorm arose, unleashing waves that crashed over the sides and filled the boat with water, these experienced sailors reached the absolute limit of their human strength and skill. They panicked because they knew enough about the water to see that the boat was sinking.

And where was Jesus? Mark includes a single, striking detail: He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow.
